Major William A. McTeer Camp No. 39, SUVCW will present the re-dedication of the Sultana memorial at the Mount Olive Cemetery on 3 May 2015 at 2 PM. This memorial was first dedicated on July 4, 1916 by descendents of survivors of the Sultana tragedy – 365 Tennessee Union veterans died among a total of more than 1,800 dead. We will have Norman Shaw, a renowned expert on the Sultana tragedy, provide a historical perspective and will have a full ceremony including a color guard, rifle salute and taps in accordance to the traditional GAR/SUVCW ceremony. Tennessee ends its five-year sesquicentennial Civil War commemoration in Knoxville with a four-day event that includes living history, speeches, tours, old-time baseball, a visits from notable guests including actor Ben Vereen and film director Ron Maxwell.
