Department of Tennessee
INFORMATION

The Department of Tennessee was Chartered on the 10th of April, 1996 with three Camps, Sultana Camp #1, Fort Donelson Camp #62 and Farragut Camp #6. The Department Activation Ceremony was held in Jackson, Tennessee, and hosted by the Sultana Camp #1 of Memphis, Tennessee. Brother Charles Yates, PCC., the Department Organizer was elected the First Commander of the Department.

The 1997 Department Encampment was held in Savannah, Tennessee, and was hosted by the Farragut Camp #6 of Savannah, Tennessee. Brother Ed Duffel, PCC was elected Department Cammander. The Encampment was attended by PC-in-C David Medert and C-in-C Alan Loomis.

The 1998 Department Encampment was held in Dover, Tennessee, and was hosted by the Fort Donelson Camp #62 of Dover, Tennessee. Brother John Anderson, PCC was elected Department Commander.

The 1999 Department Encampment was held in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and was hosted by the Missionary Ridge Camp #63 of Chattanooga, Tennessee. This was the first time a Tennessee Encampment was scheduled for a 3 day event and a most enjoyable time was had by all who attended. Brother Allen Smith, PCC was elected Department Commander.

The 2000 Department Encampment was held in Montgomery, Alabama, and was hosted by the M.G. James H. Wilson Camp #1 of Montgomery, Alabama. The meeting was held at the Alabama Department of Archives and History, across from the State Capital, and a stones throw from the First Capital of the Confederacy. We were very well received and those who attended had a great 3 days of good food and friends. The Encampment was attended by National C-in-C Danny Wheeler and his wife Betty, and Senior Vice-C-in-C Ed Kreiser. Commander Wheeler received a big Bear-hug from a Johnny-Reb when the man found out that he was National Commander of the Sons who had supported the flying of their Flag in South Carolina. Wish we had Brother Danny’s picture to see his expression when this happened! Brother Frank Harned was elected Department Commander.

The Department Encampment for the year 2001 was held in Memphis, Tennessee and hosted by the Sultana Camp #1 of Memphis, Tennessee. The Encampment was held at the Hilton Hotel in Memphis. The Encampment was attended by National Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief George Powell who addressed the assembly on pertinent issues now before the National Organization. The Encampment was highlighted by a visit to the Cemetery containing the remains of the victums of the Sultana riverboat disaster. Brother Clyde Getman was elected Department Commander.

The Department Encampment for 2002 was held March 1st & 2nd at the Raddison Airport Hotel in Madison, Alabama ( Huntsville). The site was chosen due to its central location in relation to the Department Camps. The Pvt. Richard Taylor Camp #53 assisted in the preparations for the Encampment and the Banquet. A most delightful time was had by all and the business meetings were very productive. Brother Allan Howey was elected Department Commander.

The Department of Tennessee Encampment for 2003, eighth annual, was held on March 1, 2003 at the Radisson Inn Huntsville Airport in Madison Alabama, and hosted by the Pvt. Richard Taylor Camp 53. Past CinC Edward J. Krieser and Jr. Vice Commander Stephen A. Michaels were in attendance. Charter of the Col Robert Byrd Camp presented to Byrd Camp Commander Charles Engle by the out going Commander Allan Howey. Brother Charles Engle was elected Department Commander.

The Department of Tennessee Encampment for 2004, ninth annual, was held on February 28, 2004 at the Highlands Methodist Church, Huntsville, Alabama. The location was the home meeting place of the Pvt. Richard Taylor Camp 53. Brother Getman, PDC, installed the officers for 2004. Brother Getman presented a motion to hold the 10th Encampment at Farragut. A discussion was made to possibly getting a medal commemorating the 10th Encampment in 2005. Brother Steve Pearce was elected Department Commander.

The Department of Tennessee Encampment for 2005, tenth annual, he Encampment was held January 22, 2005, at the Hampton Inn Hotel in Pickwick Dam, TN. Farragut Camp #6 hosted the Encampment. Brother Don Darby, Senior Vice-Commander-in-Chief attended and installed the officers for 2005. A special medal commemorating the 10th Encampment in 2005 was struck for the attendees. Brother Shawn Atchley was elected Department Commander.

The eleventh annual Department of Tennessee Encampment was held January 28, 2006, at the Bevill Conference Center at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. Hosting the event was the Pvt. Richard Taylor Camp located in Huntsville Al. Brother Don Darby, SUVCW Commander-in-Chief attended and installed the officers for 2006. Brother Geoffrey Hintze was elected Department Commander. The twelfth annual Encampment of the Department of Tennessee was held on January 27, 2007 at the Elks Lodge in downtown Huntsville, Alabama. Hosting the event was the Pvt. Richard Taylor Camp located in Huntsville Al. National Commander in Chief (CinC), Brother James B. Pahl attended and installed the officers for 2007. The thirteenth annual Encampment of the Department of Tennessee was held on Saturday, 26 January 2008, at the Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery, Alabama, across from the State Capital, and a stones throw from the First Capital of the Confederacy. The Major General James H. Wilson Camp #1 hosted the event. In addition, the weekend marked the 10th anniversary of the Wilson camp’s installation in 1998, and we celebrated that occasion at a dinner that evening. National Commander in Chief (CinC), Brother Charles E. Kuhn, attended and installed the officer for 2008. Brother Kenneth Early was elected Deptartment Commander. The fourteenth annual Encampment of the Department of Tennessee was held on 31 January 2009, at Ferguson Hall, 5350 Main Street, Spring Hill, Tennessee. The Fort Donnellson Camp No. 62 hosted the event. The attending Department Council and Department Officers held a brief council meeting at 10:00am. The status of camps in the department was reviewed. The department financial records for expenses and income for 2008 were reviewed, with everything in order. The department encampment began at 10:30am in accordance with the rituals of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). National Commander in Chief (CinC), Brother David V. Medert attended and installed the officers for 2009. Brother Charlie Engle was elected Department Commander.

The fifteenth annual Encampment of the Department of Tennessee was held on 30 January 2010, at Chattanooga, TN.  The attendance of the event was hampered by a large snow storm that swept across the state the day before the event. Brother Sam Gant (Fort Donelson Camp #62) was elected Department Commander.

The sixteenth annual Encampment of the Department of Tennessee was held on 29 January 2011, at Ft. Negley, Nashville, TN.  Brother Douglas K. Fidler, Ph.D. (McTeer Camp #39) was elected Department Commander. Commander in Chief Brad Schall was in attendance for the installation of officers.

The seventeenth annual Encampment of the Department of Tennessee was held on 28 January 2012 at McGhee Tyson Airport, Knoxville, TN. Brother Craig Brown of McTeer Camp #39 was installed as our current Department Commander.
